Which chew wood suits my dog?
- Coffee wood: the starting point. Medium hard, slightly sweet, in four sizes from puppy to large dog. If you do not know where to start, take coffee wood.
- Olive wood: harder and denser, finished with olive oil. For dogs that get through coffee wood too quickly.
- Ebony: the hardest wood. Only for persistent power chewers with healthy teeth.
- Chew root: the root burl of the tree heath, even denser than ebony. Lasts months for most dogs.
As a rule of thumb: the harder your dog chews, the harder the wood. If you are unsure, start with the Chew Wood Set of coffee wood, ebony and chew root and see what your dog prefers.
Is chew wood dangerous for dogs?
Ordinary sticks from the woods splinter, and splinters can injure the mouth and gullet. Chew woods are therefore made from woods that fray when chewed: fine, soft fibres come loose, which the dog spits out or digests without trouble. Still: always give chew wood under supervision and replace it as soon as it is small enough to be swallowed.
Which size do I need?
The wood should be longer than the mouth is wide, so the dog cannot take it sideways into the mouth and swallow it. Size S for dogs up to about 10 kilos, M up to 20 kilos, L up to 35 kilos, XL above that. When in doubt, go one size up.
How long does a chew wood last?
That depends on the dog. An average chewer takes two to four weeks for a coffee wood in the right size, longer for olive wood, several months for a chew root. Chew wood has no expiry date and needs no refrigeration.
Chew wood for puppies and seniors
Puppies from teething onwards get coffee wood in the smallest size, which soothes itchy gums. Seniors with sensitive teeth stick with coffee wood and leave out ebony and chew root.
