What is a cheese chew?
A cheese chew, also called a cheese bone or Himalayan cheese, is made to an old recipe from Nepal: yak and cow milk is heated, curdled with lime juice and a little salt, pressed and then dried for months. The result is a rock hard, almost lactose free cheese that dogs work on for hours. No preservatives, no flavourings, no grain.
Which dogs is a cheese chew suitable for?
For all dogs that want to chew for a long time and cannot tolerate meat or are not supposed to have it. For dogs with a meat allergy the cheese chew is often the only long lasting chew. For puppies from teething onwards in the smallest size. Not suitable for milk protein allergies and for dogs with brittle teeth.
Which size for my dog?
The cheese bone comes in five sizes. Rule of thumb: the cheese should be longer than the mouth is wide, so the dog cannot take it sideways and swallow it. Small dogs up to 10 kilos take S, medium dogs M, large dogs L or XL.
The microwave trick
When a leftover piece of the cheese bone is small enough for the dog to swallow, take it away and put it in the microwave for 30 to 60 seconds. It puffs up into an airy cheese crunchie the dog can eat straight away. Nothing goes to waste.
Cheese chew as powder
For food refusers the cheese is also available grated as a powder to sprinkle over food, plain or with turmeric. One teaspoon is enough to get even fussy dogs to empty the bowl.
Is a cheese chew dangerous?
No, as long as the size is right and you take the last piece away or puff it up in the microwave. The cheese does not splinter, it slowly softens and wears away while chewing. As with every chew: give under supervision.
