Horn, wood or root: what suits which dog?
- Beef horn: the hardest chew here. Only for strong chewers with healthy teeth. Hollow inside, many owners fill it with paste or quark.
- Coffee wood: medium hard, the starting point. Also for puppies from teething onwards in the smallest size.
- Olive wood: harder than coffee wood, finished with olive oil.
- Ebony: the hardest wood, for power chewers.
- Chew root: the root burl of the tree heath, lasts months for most dogs.
Why chews without calories?
A dog that loves to chew and is supposed to lose weight has a problem: bully sticks, beef skin and the like all count towards the daily balance. Horn, wood and root provide occupation and dental care without the dog taking anything in. That is the main reason many owners switch.
Does it splinter?
Chew wood and chew root fray while chewing, producing soft fibres, no sharp splinters. Beef horn does not splinter either, it wears away slowly. Still, for all of them: give under supervision, and replace as soon as a piece is so small that it fits entirely into the mouth.
How long do they last?
Coffee wood two to four weeks, olive wood and ebony longer, beef horn and chew root several months. None of them needs refrigeration or has an expiry date. Got dirty: rinse off, let dry, carry on.
