What is a chew root?
The chew root is the root burl of the tree heath, also called heather root. It grows in the Mediterranean and has been used for pipe bowls for centuries because it is extremely dense, heat resistant and neutral in taste. Exactly these properties make it the longest lasting chew there is.
Which dogs is the chew root suitable for?
For persistent chewers that take coffee wood or olive wood apart within days. For dogs that are supposed to lose weight but still want to chew, because the root has no calories. And for dogs with allergies, because nothing animal is in it. Not suitable for puppies before teething and for seniors with brittle teeth.
Does the chew root splinter?
No. While chewing, small soft wood fibres come loose, which the dog spits out or digests. Still: give the root under supervision and replace it when it is so small that it fits into the mouth.
Why with olive oil?
Untreated roots are very dry and smell of nothing. Soaked with olive oil they become smoother, splinter even less and are more interesting for the dog. The oil is food grade and is taken in by the dog in tiny amounts.
How long does a chew root last?
For most dogs several months, for some over a year. It needs no refrigeration and has no expiry date. If it gets dirty, rinse briefly under hot water and let it dry.
