🦐 When your dog has already been through every kind of meat

Chicken did not work. Neither did beef. Then lamb, horse, game, kangaroo, and at some point you stand in front of the shelf and realise that the list of animal species you have not yet tried has become short.

The Purwell daphnia snack sausage takes a different route. Instead of the next kind of meat it contains a tiny crustacean: daphnia, better known as water fleas. A protein source the vast majority of dogs have never had contact with, and to which they are therefore usually not sensitised.

Plus safflower, hemp and black cumin seed instead of grain. At 7.8 % crude fat the sausage is remarkably light on top of that.

📦 What is in the 200 g pack

  • 🦐 29 % daphnia: the only animal protein source in the recipe
  • 🌿 Safflower, hemp and black cumin seed: a plant base instead of grain
  • 🪶 Only 7.8 % crude fat: a light reward, even for weight control
  • 🌾 Cassava starch as a binder: gluten free root flour, no wheat
  • 🧂 0.3 % sea salt, otherwise no additives: no sugar, colourings or flavourings
  • 🇪🇺 Made in the EU: traceable origin

🐾 Which dogs is the daphnia snack sausage suitable for?

  • ✅ Dogs that react to common meats: daphnia are a new protein source for almost every dog
  • ✅ Grain free feeding: bound with cassava instead of wheat or maize
  • ✅ Dogs on weight control: much lower in fat than classic meat sausages
  • ✅ Sustainability minded owners: daphnia farming needs a fraction of the resources of livestock farming

✨ Why Purwell?

We do not make dog snacks for every dog. We make snacks for the dogs that cannot tolerate anything on the supermarket shelf any more. That is exactly what this product is for: as the next option when the list of meats has been worked through.

And we state what is inside, including the proportions. For a dog on an elimination diet that is not a courtesy but the basis of every decision.

❓ Frequently asked questions

What are daphnia anyway?
Small freshwater crustaceans, colloquially called water fleas. They have been bred as feed animals for decades and provide high quality protein and minerals. They are not related to fleas, by the way, the name comes from their hopping swimming motion.

Is this a single protein snack?
In terms of animal protein, yes: daphnia are the only animal protein source. Besides that the recipe contains plant ingredients (safflower, hemp, black cumin, cassava) and 0.2 % collagen casing as the sausage skin. If you are running a strict elimination diet, please go through the ingredient list with your vet.

Will my dog react to it if it has a fish allergy?
Daphnia are not fish but crustaceans, so a fish allergy is not an automatic exclusion criterion. With a known crustacean intolerance, however, caution is advised.

How many pieces can my dog have per day?
According to the feeding recommendation: dogs under 10 kg 3 to 5 pieces daily, dogs over 10 kg 5 to 10 pieces. It is a snack and does not replace a meal, count it towards the daily ration.

Why is the crude ash value so high at 20.7 %?
That comes from the chitin shell and the high mineral content of the daphnia, normal for crustaceans and not a quality defect. If your dog has kidney disease or is on a mineral reduced diet, please check with your vet before feeding.

How does the sausage smell and taste?
Much milder than fish or tripe products, rather nutty and earthy from the seeds. One of the least noticeable options in the range for the treat bag.

Do dogs really eat this?
Most do, but acceptance is a little fussier than with meat snacks, the taste is simply unfamiliar. If your dog is picky, test a small amount first before buying bigger.

How do I best store it?
Cool and dry, reseal the bag after taking a piece out. The best before date is stamped on the packaging.
